Civil Air Patrol (CAP)
offers one year monetary scholarships for cadets. Awarded on a
competitive basis, the number and amount awarded each year is based on
the total amount of scholarship funds available for that year.
Current cadet members (who have completed the Billy
Mitchell Award) can apply for these scholarships by completing a CAP
Form 95, Application for Civil Air Patrol Scholarships.
Applications must be sent to HQ CAP/CPR and postmarked no later
than 31 January each year (unless otherwise noted).
Some scholarships are also available to current senior
members (who have completed the Billy Mitchell Award as a cadet or have
completed the Cadet Programs Specialty Track senior rating). We have
noted those scholarships that are open to senior members in the
descriptions below. Seniors should follow the same application
procedures and deadlines as the cadets.
Here are some of the flight related scholarship opportunities:
1. The Major General Lucas V. Beau Flight Scholarship. The Order
of Daedalians, a national fraternity of military pilots, awards
five $2,100 scholarships to cadets ages 15 ½ to 18 ½ with uncorrected
20/20 vision, demonstrating a desire for a career in military aviation.
These scholarships provide financial means to receive ground and flight
training leading to a FAA private pilot license. Note: HQ CAP/CPR must
receive the application no later than 1 April of each year.
2. Dowling College. Dowling
College annually sponsors two one-year full tuition scholarships
(valued at about $8,000) and two one-year half tuition scholarships
(valued at about $4,000) for cadets enrolled in the Dowling College
School of Aviation. Also open to senior members.
3. Spartan School Of Aeronautics. Spartan
School of Aeronautics offers up to twenty $2,500 Scholarships to CAP
cadets attending one of their 26 aviation education programs. Also open
to senior members.
4. Colonel Louisa Spruance Morse Cap Scholarships. Annually, Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University makes three $1,000 scholarships available to
students who are enrolled at an Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
campus and have completed the first semester of AFROTC. See your AFROTC
instructor for information and applications. Also open to senior
members.
5. USAF Chief Of Staff Scholarship. This $1,500 scholarship is
awarded to the Outstanding Cadet of the Year as outlined in CAPR 39-3.
The money is sent to the educational institution or training facility of
the cadet’s choice.
6. Clara E. Livingston Cadet Scholarship. This $4,000
scholarship named after an aviation pioneer, a cap member during World
War II, and the former Puerto Rico wing commander, is available to
Puerto Rico Wing Cadets. Puerto Rico Wing Cadets are encouraged to apply
for this award to advance their preparation and training for any field
such as flying, the progressions, academic, business or manual art or
for travel directed toward an expansion of his or her horizons. Contact
Puerto Rico Wing for more information.
7. US Air Force Academy Preparatory School. Each year, Civil
Air Patrol National Headquarters submits recommendations to the US Air
Force Academy (USAFA) for one
qualified cadet to attend the Academy’s Preparatory School (USAFAPS).
The school’s one-year program (valued at more than $32,500) increases
a student’s potential for admission to the Academy and successful
completion of the Academy curriculum. Note: This is an application
for a recommendation, not a nomination or an appointment. Applications
are due to HQ CAP/CPR by 30 November of each year. In some years,
the USAFA has extended direct appointments (valued at over $131,000
each) to some of our recommended cadets. In 1999, one cadet was selected
for the USAFA Preparatory School, while four cadets were offered direct
appointments into the USAFA.
8. CAP Solo Scholarships. Each year, the CAP Corporation
provides up to $30,000 in solo flight scholarships. This money is
distributed to the cadets who have completed one of our glider or
powered National Flight Academies (NFA) each summer, up to $150
reimbursement per cadet, to help offset the costs of flight training
leading towards a solo flight. No application is necessary to receive
this scholarship. Successfully completing one of the National Flight
Academies is required. The Activity Director at each NFA will distribute
the scholarship to the students.
9. Other Scholarships. Although not flight related, CAP does
offer a number of academic scholarships as well. These include the United
Services Automobile Association’s (USAA)
five $1,000 scholarships, and our CAP Corporate scholarships averaging
over $33,000 per year. To find out more about these scholarships, click
